The giant Hospital Ship that the Health Non-Governmental Organization ‘MERCY SHIPS’ is building since 2014 in ‘TIANJIN XINGANG SHIPYARD’, is approaching delivery. Upon completion, new ‘GLOBAL MERCY’ will be the world’s largest ‘Civilian Hospital Ship’ with 6 fully equipped operating rooms. MERCY SHIPS provides medical care to underserved areas of Sub-Saharan Africa. According to MERCY SHIPS, almost half of the region’s population lives in coastal areas, and hospital ships are the most practical way to care for people in need. The ships also provide training for local medical professionals, and by supporting medical facilities on land, they are also providing the needed capacity building. During the 50-year expected life of the new ship, it is estimated that it will provide operating rooms for more than 150,000 people. In addition, there will be training areas and a simulation laboratory, where the trainers of the organization can train local health personnel. Rosa WHITAKER, The Head of MERCY SHIPS, said: “GLOBAL MERCY will be a true modern-day wonder. It will be a fully custom built hospital ship with state-of-the-art modern facilities and trained staff.”. It is known that Bill and Sue GROSS, the owners of PIMCO, donated 20 million dollars. In addition, medical technology company BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company) donated $ 1 million in cash and product to support the construction and launch of world’s largest NGO Hospital Ship. DELTAMARIN designed the ship and STENA RoRo manages the construction for MERCY SHIPS. The ship has 4 Wärtsilä 32 engines.
